Location: We are seeking a Sous Chef for the Franklin Park Zoo located in Boston, MA. This role will also be expected to work 10-20% at the Stone Zoo as well.

Hourly: $24-$32

The Franklin Park Zoo is a 72 acres zoo located in Boston, Massachusetts. Franklin Park Zoo is home to incredible animals from around the globe. Visitors can stand face-to-face with the Zoo's seven western lowland gorillas at one of five glass viewing stations in the state-of-the-art indoor exhibit. Within 30 minutes of The Franklin Park Zoo, the Stone Zoo is a medium- to small-sized zoo of about 26 acres in Stoneham, Massachusetts. Founded in 1905, the zoo includes low-lying areas densely developed with smaller exhibits for animals as well as rocky forested hillsides devoted to larger habitats for Species Survival Plan programs.

Principal Function:

The Sous Chef is responsible for ensuring that guests receive an exceptional level of service by supervising staff and supporting the operations. They will assign tasks and delegate responsibilities to Leads and will monitor servers as they provide a variety of pre-made or fresh-to-order snacks, beverages and entrée items from Sodexo Live!'s menu.

Their top priority will be to ensure that the highest levels of cleanliness and sanitation are maintained. Style of service may be either take-away, restaurant-style or in-seat service format. .

The Sous Chef will plan and prepare in advance of events, will provide hands on supervision during events and will organize post-event closing and clean up.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assume grill or line responsibilities within the kitchen requiring detail and creativity and will perform responsibilities for food preparation that require a greater level of experience and expertise.

  • Contribute to Sodexo Live!'s operational and financial success by following all Sodexo Live! culinary standards for sanitation and preparation, and by guiding other Culinary staff members to ensure that food product is of the highest quality in taste and appearance, to satisfy guest expectations and to maximize food revenues.

  • Prepare and coordinate orders to ensure they are cooked in a timely, accurate, consistent and quality manner.

  • Supporting Actions:

  • Set up and stock station and ensure other work areas are stocked accordingly, as directed by Executive Chef or Sous Chef. Utilize proper recipes, equipment, tools and utensils.

  • Adhere to company standards for food quality, taste, flavor and presentation. Ensure that food is portioned and presented according to standards, as well as guest specifications and preferences; Inspect portions and appearance of food prepared by other staff members, as directed by Executive Chef or Sous Chef to ensure consistent adherence to Sodexo Live! standards for food quality.

  • Ensure all products are prepared, held and served at correct temperatures. Work in collaboration with other unit culinary team members to achieve operational objectives; Assist in training fellow kitchen staff members, as directed by Executive Chef or Sous Chef.

  • Participate and assist in coordinating the flow of work within the culinary department to maximize quality and efficiency.

  • End Results: Food is prepared and presented in a consistent, efficient, and appetizing manner: ensure all Sodexo Live! standards for food quality are met; Guests receive an E3 experience; while ensuring that the Culinary department runs smoothly.

Qualifications/Skills: Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • College degree or combination of education and work experience to support on-the-job effectiveness.
  • 1-2 years supervisory experience in a fast-paced foodservice facility preferred.
  • Ability to understand written and oral direction and to communicate same with others.
  • Ability to promote and participate in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a high stress, fast paced environment
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used by guests who typically visit the work location.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a food preparation position
  • Ability to promote and participate in a team environment.
  • Ability to understand written and oral direction and to communicate same with others.

Other Requirements:
Must be able to stand and exert well-paced mobility in an often tightly-quartered environment. Have the ability to bend and lift up to 30 pounds frequently. Must be able to give direction most of the working day speaking clearly and listening attentively to guests and other employees. Hours may be extended or irregular to include nights, weekends and holidays.

Must be able to meet the following requirements with reasonable accommodation:

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and carry approximately 20 feet.
  • Ability to physically walk approximately one-fourth (¼) of a mile and the circumference of the unit several times a day.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee must be able to perform repetitive motions.
  • Employee must have ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

  • The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Ability to multitask in an office or operations setting.
  • Ability to operate telephone and to talk and/or hear in a retail store location setting (noise level is moderate).
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to, grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach and lift overhead.
  • Ability to operate a desktop computer or register terminal.
  • Ability to understand written information.
  • Other lifting or physical requirements as added from time to time, or as required to perform the essential functions of this job.
